Any phone or laptop camera can read the barcodes and QR codes on airway bills and packing slips. You do not need a scanner gun.
Where you can scan
- Log orders: press Scan in the Dispatch or Return box. The camera opens straight away and the keyboard stays closed. Switch between Dispatch and Return at the top of the camera window.
- Scan at the top of the page: on the dashboard it opens Log orders with the camera on (if you may log parcels). At the top of the camera window you switch between Dispatch, Return and Find.
- Find tells you what a parcel is: the order, the customer, the courier and its status, with buttons to open the order, see its history or log it as dispatched or returned. On every other page, Scan opens straight in Find.
- Any box for order or tracking numbers has a small camera button: the search boxes on Orders and Bookings, Book orders, the batch editor, Set tracking numbers and Waiting for tracking.
How a scan works
- Hold the barcode inside the frame, about a hand's width away.
- The ring around the frame fills while the camera reads the same code several times, to be sure.
- When the ring closes you hear a beep and feel a short buzz at once, and the number lands in the box. A moment later the tracker checks that one number: if it is fine you hear nothing more; if it needs a look you hear a second sound (amber: two soft notes, red: two low buzzes) and the line is coloured. Grey means you had already scanned it (a short note, and it is not added again).
- Keep scanning the next parcel. Close the camera with Done or your phone's Back button.
What the window shows (v90.4)
The window keeps the same shape however many parcels you scan, so the camera never shrinks and the reading box never gets smaller.
- The camera keeps its size from the first scan to the last.
- A big number under it counts the different parcels in the box. See all next to it opens a sheet with everything scanned in this session (the newest 300); close it with the cross and keep scanning.
- The last three scans, one line each, with a dot: green is fine, amber and red need a look (the reason is on the line), grey ring means not checked.
- One line of text says what just happened. If you have scanned nothing for 9 seconds after the camera opened, it suggests holding the label flat, a hand's width away, or using the light. Once something was scanned it does not nag you again.
TipOn a slow connection the beep still comes at once. A number the server does not answer about within 8 seconds is kept and marked not checked; the whole box is checked once more when you press Done, and the chips under the box show the result.
- 1× / 2× / 4× (top right): press it to zoom in on small or faint barcodes. It shows only when the camera can zoom, and 4× only when it can zoom that far.
- Light (top right): turns on the phone's light in a dark room. When the picture is too dark, the button blinks to suggest it.
- Warning sound on Log orders turns the beeps on or off.
TipThe camera needs the secure address (https). The first time, your phone asks for permission: choose Allow. If you said no by mistake, allow the camera for this site in your browser's settings.
